Troubleshooting

Game crashes or won't launch: first steps

The checks that fix most crashes and launch errors, in the order to try them.

By the CODCheats team Updated

Work through these in order. Most problems are fixed by one of the first four.

Check the build status

If the game has just been patched, the build may show Updating or Maintenance on its game page and on the status page. In that case nothing on your side will fix it. Wait for the status to return to Operational.

Restart your PC

A full restart clears stuck background processes and finishes any half-installed updates. Do this before anything else on this list.

Repair the game files

A damaged or partly updated install is a common cause of crashes on launch.

Battle.net

  1. Select the game in the Battle.net app.
  2. Select the cog icon next to the Play button.
  3. Choose Scan and Repair, then Begin Scan.

Steam

  1. Right-click the game in your library and choose Properties.
  2. Open Installed Files.
  3. Select Verify integrity of game files.

The builds do not run with the Xbox app (PC Game Pass) version of the game yet. Xbox Game Pass support is coming soon.

Update Windows and your graphics drivers

Install pending Windows updates and the latest driver for your graphics card. Check your PC before you buy explains where to find both.

Close overlays and recording software

Overlays draw on top of the game and can conflict with each other. Close or disable them one at a time to find the cause: the Discord overlay, the NVIDIA app overlay, Xbox Game Bar and tools such as MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner.

Still crashing?

Contact support and include:

  • the game, and the status shown on its page
  • exactly what happens, including any error message or code
  • which of the steps above you have already tried

That is everything needed to start on the problem without a round of follow-up questions.
